Are You A Carer?

A carer is an individual of any age, including children, who offers unpaid assistance to a partner, family member, friend, or neighbour who relies on their help to manage various life challenges. This dependency can stem from factors such as old age, frailty, disability, a severe health condition, mental health issues, or substance misuse. Parents caring for disabled children or those with severe health conditions are also recognised as carers.

Recognising that you are an unpaid carer at your registered surgery can mark the initial step towards obtaining the necessary assistance and support for you in your carer role.

We are here to support carers, and recognise that everyone's circumstances are unique.

Caring for someone can be fulfilling, but we understand that it can also be demanding, exhausting, and, for some, socially isolating. We are committed to assisting our caregivers because we recognise the immense value and significance of your role. Therefore, it is crucial that you inform your practice about your carer status. Once you have informed your registered practice that you are a carer, we will include your details in our carer register. This ensures that our medical staff are aware of your caregiving responsibilities, and we may be able to provide additional support to help you manage your own health, including:

  • Access to flu vaccinations

  • Flexible and priority appointment scheduling

  • Referrals to specialized caregiver services

  • Follow-up communications from dedicated Care Coordinators attached to each surgery

  • An opportunity to participate in our monthly GP Carers Clinic for one-on-one, in-person support

All newly registered carers will receive a call or letter from our Carers Lead and a carers welcome package and a phone call for additional support.
